Fort Hills is expected to be in operation for more than 50 years. That means a wide variety of career opportunities for people from construction through to full operations. Fort Hills is a joint venture between Suncor, Total and Teck Resources, and Suncor is the site operator. During construction of Fort Hills the majority of the employment opportunities will be with the contractors listed below. As the construction phase winds down and the operation phase begins in 2016/2017, Suncor will hire the bulk of the engineers, operations leaders, skilled trades and heavy equipment operators needed to operate the mine.

There are three main types of employment at Kearl – working for the companies building the expansion projects, and careers with Imperial Oil or contract companies in the operation of Kearl. During the construction of the expansion project, most job opportunities will be through Imperial Oil’s construction contractors. The main contractors currently on-site are K2, AMEC, Fluor, Kiewit, PCL and Horton CBI. K2 is a Kiewit/Klemke joint venture with a focus on earthworks. Fluor’s focus is on the provision of infrastructure and site-wide services, and AMEC is focused on managing the project’s engineering and procurement. Kiewit is constructing Kearl’s froth treatment facilities and PCL is working on Kearl’s utilities’ construction. Additionally, Horton CBI is focused on the extraction and tank farm area.
